Pada umumnya para sejarawan menyebut ada tiga dinasti yang pernah berkuasa di Kerajaan Medang atau biasa dikenal juga dengan kerajaan Mataram Kuno, yaitu Wangsa Sanjaya dan Wangsa Sailendra pada periode Jawa Tengah, serta Wangsa Isyana pada periode Jawa Timur.

Periode Kerajaan Medang adalah antara abad ke 7 sampai abad ke 9/10.
