Menurut Rune, konseptualisme merupakan suatu pemecahan universal dengan cara mengkompromikan ekstrem nominalisme dan ekstrem realisme, dimana konsep-konsep abstrak umum di dalam hal-hal particular dilihat sebagai esensi. Konseptualisme menganggap bahwa hal-hal universal ada hanya dalam konsep. universal hanya berada di dalam pikiran bukan di luar pikiran. Perkembangan di kemudian hari menunjukkan bahwa aliran realisme-kritis dan realisme-moderat-lah yang beranggapan bahwa pengetahuan adalah suatu bentuk persatuan antara subjek-objek, dan bukan hanya sekadar pertemuan.
Conceptualism is a solution of the problem of universal which seeks a compromise between extreme nominalism (generic concepts are signs which apply indifferently to a number of particulars) and extreme realism (generic concepts refer to subsystem universal). Conceptualism offers various interpretation of conceptual objectivity: (a) the generic concept refers to a class of resembling particulars, (b) the object of a concept is a universal essence pervading the particulars, but having no reality apart from them, © concepts refer to abstracts that is to say, to ideal objects envisaged by the mind but having no metaphysical status (Runes, 1975)
